  • TV SOONG (宋子文 Song Ziwen) – Columbia alumnus and banker, who proved to be a far savvier and wilier Minister of Finance before and after Han Liang (father Charlie, sisters Ai-ling, May-ling and Ching-ling)
  • SUN Fo (孫科 Sun Ke) – American-Cantonese son of Sun Yat-sen, Berkeley graduate and Columbia friend, mayor of Canton and KMT official, responsible for Han Liang's foray into the world of politics
  • Albino SYCIP (薛敏老 Xue Minlao) – Amoy and Manila native, Anglo-Chinese College and U Mich alumnus, who co-founded China Banking Corporation and hired Han Liang (brother Alfonso, wife Helen Vonglin Bau, son Washington)
  • TAO Hsing Chih (陶行知 Tao Xingzhi) – Columbia classmate, student of educator John Dewey and proponent of mass education, who sent a photo of himself with Han Liang to his mother, sister and wife
  • Ken WANG (王賡 Wang Geng) – Wuxi native, Boxer Indemnity scholar, alumnus of Han Liang’s three US alma maters plus West Point, roomed with Han Liang at Princeton and later became an attaché to the Versailles Peace Conference and served under warlords Chang Tso-lin and Sun Ch’uan-fang before joining the Kuomintang

  • James ANGELL – University of Michigan president and Minister to China responsible for the warm welcome of Chinese students like Han Liang and allegedly a moderate voice in the creation of the Chinese Exclusion Act
  • William Jennings BRYAN – US Secretary of State, former presidential candidate and inspirational Christian speaker, with whom Han Liang had the chance to share a lunch at a Student Volunteer Movement convention
  • Carolyn Knowland HYDE – Pennsylvania oil heiress and respected social activist to whom Han Liang dedicated his PhD thesis; they are believed to have been acquainted through the YMCA/YWCA network
  • Edmund JAMES – University of Illinois president and early advocate of bringing Chinese students like Han Ho to the US​
  • Jeremiah JENKS – proponent of the gold standard for China who employed Han Liang at NYU’s ”Far Eastern Bureau" and also suggested his PhD topic on land taxation
  • William WILLOUGHBY – advisor to President Yuan Shikai and Princeton professor whose research on land taxation Han Liang drew on to write his PhD thesis
  • Woodrow WILSON ​– US president, former Governor of New Jersey and president of Princeton, and Princeton alumnus, who probably inspired Han Liang's transfer to  Princeton but also disappointed him, as many other Chinese, at the conclusion of World War I with his disregard for Chinese sovereignty

BANKERS & BUSINESSMEN
  • CHANG Kia-ngau (張嘉璈 Zhang Jia’ao, 1889-1979) – head of the privately held of Bank of China, who offered Han Liang honor but not money during his time as Minister of Finance and was a faithful friend and mahjong partner during their retirements in Palo Alto
  • KP CHEN (陳光甫 Chen Guangfu, 1880-1976) – Kiangsu native, Wharton alumnus, founder of the Shanghai Commercial Bank and China Travel Service, who gave Han Liang his first job and was later his next-door neighbor and moral backer during his stint as Finance Mnister 
  • Bang HOW (夏鵬 Xia Peng, 1896-1972) – Wharton-educated Commercial Press heir who orchestrated Han Liang’s marriage to the eldest of his eight sisters
  • HOW Zoen-Fong (夏瑞芳 Xia Ruifang, 1871-1914) – former hospital orderly and typesetter who went on to co-found the wildly successful Commercial Press, assassinated before Han Liang married his eldest daughter
  • KO Leong Hoe (高粱和 Gao Lianghe, 1895-1937) – little known Singaporean born in Amoy who shares a double bill with Han Liang as the force behind Ho Hong Bank's Hong Kong and Shanghai operations
  • LIM Boon Keng (林文慶 Lin Wenqing, 1869-1957) – doctor, social activist and Singapore elder statesman who co-founded the Ho Hong and Oversea-Chinese banks and presided over the opening of Ho Hong’s Hong Kong office, which Han Liang presumably also attended
  • LIM Peng Siang (林秉祥 Lin Bingxiang, 1872-1944) –entrepreneur and bank co-founder whose diversified business empire gave the Ho Hong bank its name
  • LIN K’ang-hou (林康猴 Lin Kanghou) – Chekiang native and banker with good connections who Han Liang tapped to be his deputy at the Ministry of Finance
  • PEI Tsu-yee (貝祖詒 Bei Zuyi, 1893-1982) – Bank of China banker whom it’s assumed Han Liang got to know when they were both based in Hong Kong (son architect IM, second wife Aileen)
  • SEOW Poh Leng (蕭保齡 Xiao Baoling, 1883-1942) – general manager of Ho Hong Bank in Singapore throughout the time Han Liang that was general manager in Hong Kong and Shanghai and another a tennis aficionado
  • SUN Heqing (孫鶴卿, 1868-1928) – native of Shi Tang Wan, silk filature entrepreneur and Wuxi grandee who may have been a relative of Zing Wei’s mother’s family, also surnamed Sun and known to be in the silk business
  • TAN Ee-leong – Singaporean banker trained by Han Liang, who would write a brief history of the bank documenting Han Liang’s role
  • TAN Kah Kee (陳嘉庚 Chen Jiageng, 1874-1961) – Fukien entrepreneur and philanthropist who made his fortune in the rubber trade in Singapore and who started the university which employed Han Ho and school that educated Han Yang
  • CY TUNG (董兆榮 Dong Zhaorong, aka 董浩雲 Dong Haoyun, 1912-1982) – Ningbo native and founder of Orient Overseas shipping line, who mentioned Han Liang in his diary, noting his brief political career, dancing skills and younger two sons

MAJOR HISTORICAL FIGURES DISCUSSED
  • CHIANG Kai-shek (蔣介石 Jiang Jieshi, 1887-1975) – rising from a military background, became leader of the Kuomintang and anti-Japanese and anti-Communist resistance; interlude in his leadership created the opening for Han Liang to serve briefly as Finance Minister
  • SOONG May-ling (宋美齡, 1898-2003) – sister of Han Liang’s nemesis TV Soong, who like her brother played major role in shaping American support for her husband Chiang Kai-shek’s Kuomintang regime
  • SUN Yat-sen (孫中山 Sun Zhongshan, 1866-1925) –  doctor, revolutionary, co-founder of the Kuomintang, who is remembered as father of the Chinese nation; also father of Han Liang’s close friend Sun Fo, who was responsible for drawing Han Liang into politics (second wife Soong Ching-ling)
  • WANG Ching-wei (汪精衛 Wang Jingwei, 1883-1944) – native of Guangdong, major figure in the Kuomintang and rival to Chiang Kai-shek, who was never able to assert his claim to power and whose ultimate downfall lay in his collaboration with the Japanese
  • YUAN Shikai (袁世凱, 1859-1916) – Qing military commander who was confirmed as 1st president of the Republic of China following the abdication of Sun Yat-sen and served as China’s head of state for most of the time Han Liang was in the US

OTHER POLITICAL FIGURES
  • CHEN Duxiu (陳獨秀) – early editor of the influential "New Youth" magazine and co-founder of the Chinese Communist Party
  • CIXI (慈禧太后 Cixi Tai Hou) – Dowager Empress to Guangxu and real power behind the Qing throne, who died in 1908, the year that Han Liang began his Western education
  • DIONG Ahok (張鶴齡 Zhang Heling) – Christian convert and benefactor of Han Liang's alma mater Anglo-Chinese College
  • GUANGXU (光緒) – penultimate Qing emperor, who died in 1908, the year that Han Liang began his Western education
  • Wellington KOO (顧維鈞 Gu Weijun) – like Han Liang a Columbia graduate, who went on to distinguished diplomatic career, serving as Ambassador to the US and member of Chinese delegation to 1918 Versailles Peace Conference
  • KOXINGA (國姓爺 Guo Xing Ye) – half-Fukienese, half-Japanese hero of Han Liang’s hometown who led resistance to Qing rule
  • LOU Tseng-Tsiang (陸徵祥 Lu Zhengxiang) – foreign minister who was part of Chinese delegation to 1918 Versailles Peace Conference that was betrayed by its own government
  • PUYI (溥儀愛新覺羅 Puyi Aixin Jue Luo) – last Qing emperor who abdicated in 1912 at the age of six as Han Liang was starting his second semester of his US university studies at the University of Michigan
  • TANG Guo'an (唐國安) – Foreign Ministry official responsible for Boxer Indemnity scholarships which gave Han Liang his opportunity to study in the US
  • TUAN Ch’i-jui (段祺瑞 Duan Qirui) – Yuan Shikai protégé and successor as president who made a secret deal with Japan at the conclusion of World War One

CULTURAL FIGURES
  • Moses CHIU (周慕西 Zhou Muxi, 1879-1914) – older half-brother of Han Liang’s sister-in-law Peggy, who was a scholar of ancient Greek, Latin and Hebrew China’s first awardee of a PhD from the University of Berlin, and the reason that Peggy grew up partly in England
  • Ping-Wen KUO (郭秉文 Guo Bingwen, 1880-1969) – graduate of Columbia Teachers College, president of Nanking’s Southeast University, Kuomintang official and Han Liang’s quasi-brother-in-law by dint of marriage to Mo-li’s sister Ruth
  • LIN Yutang (林語堂, 1895-1976) – from a Christian family from rural Fukien, wrote equally well in English and Chinese, and noted in particular for his works explaining China to the West; believed to have become friendly with the Huang family during the time he and Han Ho were both at the University of Amoy
  • LU Hsun (魯迅 Lu Xun, 1881-1936) – Japanese-trained doctor turned writer, whose sharp social criticism defined the May 19th zeitgeist; spent a brief time at the new University of Amoy while Han Ho was there
  • ZHANG Yuanji (張元濟, 1867-1959) – managing editor of Commercial Press after How's assassination responsible for its continued success, who Han Liang entertained in Hong Kong the year before his marriage to Mo-li
