Fifty Year Report for Princeton
“H.L., after taking his Ph.D. in Economics from Columbia in 1918, returned to his country and went into banking business in which he made rapid strides and became the chief executive of the Ho Hong Bank, Ltd., now known as the Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation, in Hong Kong and Shanghai. In 1930 he was called to the service of the Nationalist Government in Nanking to serve as Deputy Minister of Railways. In the following year when Japan began her invasion of North China the Government, in response to the clamor and demand of the people, was reorganized and he was chosen to head the Ministry of Finance in a new “Cabinet” under the premiership of Dr. Sun Fo, son of the Founder of the Chinese Republic.
“After retiring from the government in 1932 he went back to business and became interested in the Philippines where the Chinese community holds a dominant position in the economy of the country. He became director of the China Banking Corporation and chairman of the board of directors of the Philippine First Insurance Company, both of which positions he still holds in his retirement.”

*AGES & BIRTHDAYS
Many different years are given for Han Liang's birth. We assume that 1891, the year that appears on his tombstone, is most accurate, especially since 1893 is also the year accepted for the birth of his younger brother, Han Ho, by his younger brother's family. Confusion is understandable in an era when birth certificates were not issued and when Chinese custom counted a child as one year old upon birth and two years old upon the arrival of the Chinese New Year (indeed Han Ho's family considered him to have reached the age of 100 upon his death in 1993, although he died before his 100th birthday). |
In addition, it appears that Han Liang may have deliberately reduced his age at some point in order to ensure that he was not barred from certain educational opportunities.
When ages are given on this site, the years have been calculated in the Western fashion, albeit based on birthdates that may reflect lunar calendar dates. For example, Han Liang's birthday is recorded as August 23; we assume that derives from the 23rd day of the lunar calendar 8th month, which would actually fallen around October. |
